Balduinstein is a municipality located in Rhineland in the east of Germany. It was established as a settlement around the archbishops castle built here in the 14th century. However, the rapid development of this settlement began as early as in the 17th century, when valuable raw materials – marble and iron – were found nearby. Unfortunately, the town was almost completely destroyed by the plague, which at the end of the 17th century ravaged the region. The scale of the cataclysm is evidenced by the fact that from the 40 families living here before, only 8 survived the epidemic. Nevertheless, they managed to rebuild the town, which exists to this day. The castle that gave rise to the town only ruins remain today.
