Belém is one of the districts of Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. The monumental Monument of the Discoveries with its shape reminiscent of the caravel is one of its landmarks. The structure commemorates the most important figures from the period of the Great Geographic Discoveries, i.e. sailors and navigators, scientists, missionaries, chroniclers, as well as rulers and politicians supporting the conquest of unknown lands. At the foot of the monument there is a marble mosaic in the shape of a stylized wind rose. In its center there is a map with marked routes of sea voyages of Vasco da Gama, Ferdinand Magellan and other Portuguese sailors.
