Colmar is a small town located at the foot of the Vosges on the river Rhine. It lies in the north-western part of France near the border with Germany. Colmar is one of the traditional centers of the textile industry, as well as a large center of wine production, one of the most important in Alsace. The town had a lot of luck - it was not destroyed during the French Revolution or World Wars and thanks to that the old town is compact and coherent in terms of architecture. There are many medieval buildings, built with the use of the half-timbered technique. The vicinity of the river Lauch and its numerous canals is called "Little Venice". Formerly the canals separated the town’s quarters from each other: butchers, tanners and fishmongers.
