Façades of guildhalls on the Grand Place in Brussels (Belgium) online puzzle
Te Grand Place in Brussels is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful markets in Europe. It was the most important part of this mercantile city from its inception until 1695, when it was almost completely destroyed by the French artillery. The buildings were almost completely burnt down, but the City Hall survived the bombardment, it is ironic as it had been the main target of the French fire. The Grand Place was rebuilt in four years thanks to the efforts of Brussels guilds and merchants. Thanks to this rebuilding the site is very uniform and unique – it combines the styles of Gothic, Baroque and Louis XIV. The façades of guildhalls standing around the square are very richly decorated, each has its own name, referring to the symbolism of the guild, reflected also in the ornamentation.
