Buckingham Palace was built in 1705 by the Duke of Buckingham as his city residence. Nearly 60 years later it was acquired by King George III and became his private mansion, nevertheless, it was announced the official residence of the British monarchs only in 1837. Since then the palace was repeatedly extended. Today it is the world's largest palace serving its original function. It must be remembered that this is not only the residence of Queen Elizabeth II – all important state ceremonies and diplomatic meetings are held here. For the British citizens Buckingham Palace is a symbol of the British statehood, whereas for tourists – a must to visit. The apartments can be visited only in August and September – during the queen’s holidays.
