The Eiffel Tower is the most famous building in Paris, it is the landmark not only of the city, but also of France. The structure was built in 1889 as the entrance arch to the World's Fair. It was meant to commemorate the centenary of the French Revolution and at the same time to express the architectural skills of artists and reflect the spirit of the age. It was then 312 meters high as well as the highest building in the world. The names of the seventy-two French scientists, engineers and industrialists were placed at the level of the first balcony. As a temporary building the Eiffel Tower was to be demolished after twenty years, however, it was saved as the wireless telegraph transmitter was mounted on the top of it. Today the tower is visited by millions of tourists every year.
