Plasencia is a small town located in the western part of Spain. Since the ancient times this town has been situated on a trade route, known as the Silver Route (Spanish: Ruta de la Plata). Due to the strategic location of the town, it was protected by walls since the earliest times, the ruins of the walls can still be admired. However, a huge structure of the medieval cathedral that was built on a hill is most distinguished in the panorama of the town. This is the so-called New Cathedral (Spanish: Catedral Nueva). Its construction had begun in the fifteenth century, however, it was never finished due to the protracted work and technical problems the building was halted in 1760. In spite of this, the cathedral is the biggest tourist attraction and the landmark of Plasencia.
