The town of Vittoriosa, which is also called Birgu, is located between the bays of Kalkara and Dockyard. The town's history is mainly connected with the Order of Malta, who fortified it in the fear of the Ottoman army invasion. The Fort of St. Angel is the extraterritorial property of the Knights of St. John. It played a key role during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. In Birgu there is also the 16th-century Palace of the Inquisitors, where you can visit the courtroom, cells and the place where convicts were executed. There is the church of St. Lawrence as well. Vittoriosa is the part of agglomeration, which also include the towns of Senglea and Cospicua.
