Strassburger Denkmal Monument in Basel (Switzerland) online puzzle
Basel is a city located on the border of Switzerland, France and Germany. The strategic location of the city played an important role in the history of international fights. Strassburger Denkmal Monument reminds of those events, depicting the figure of an angel and a person holding a shield which protects a woman and a child. The monumental sculpture was meant to express the gratitude of the French, who during the siege of Strasbourg were given shelter – these were mostly women and children. In 1870 Switzerland accepted civilians who thus escaped the German bombing. The monument was created in 1895 by the French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi. A group figures on a pedestal is located in the De Wette park near the train station.
