Calgary is one of the largest cities in Canada. It is situated in the south of the country in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains on the Bow River. The city was founded in the second half of the 19th century as a defensive fort and began to grow rapidly after building the railroad. Today it is the most important center of oil and natural gas industry. As all the world's metropolises, Calgary also boasts high buildings situated in its downtown. Among the high-rise buildings of Calgary the Bow Tower is the most distinguished – it is both the youngest and the tallest building in the city. It was erected on the plan of the arc with rounded ends and for that reason the tower is devoid of sharp edges, which are characteristic of the rest of the skyscrapers in Calgary.
