Stone ruins of ancient Pergamon (Turkey) online puzzle
The city of Bergama is located in Izmir Province, in the western part of Turkey. There are archeological sites in the neighborhood as the city of Pergamon – one of the most important cities of the Hellenic period – was situated here. In the 3rd century B.C. the famous Library of Pergamon was built and it is believed that parchment made of animal hides owes its name to the city in which its production was initiated. Pergamon could boast a large theater with the audience situated on a steep slope, the Sanctuary of Athena and the Temple of Dionysus, gymnasium. Today visitors to Pergamon may see the ruins of the Asclepium, i.e. the Sanctuary of Asclepius, the god of healing, and the Acropolis with the ruins of the amphitheater and the view on the reconstructed Sanctuary of Trajan. The Great Altar of Pergamon – the most precious monument related to Pergamon and believed to be dedicated to Zeus, is kept in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin.
