New York is the center of a large agglomeration and the most populous city of the United States. The Big Apple is composed of five boroughs. The one situated on the island of Manhattan is the smallest, but at the same time most populous and most expensive. The East River—a tidal strait—separates Brooklyn and Manhattan. The river may be crossed through the bridge. Among the bridges spanning the two parts of the city there is the Manhattan Bridge – a two-level suspension bridge that was completed in 1909 and it is 2089 meters long. The Brooklyn Bridge is the other important construction that spans the two New York districts. The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the world’s oldest bridges – it was opened in 1883.
