Gas Street canal in Birmingham (United Kingdom) online puzzle
Gas Street in Birmingham is considered as the heart of the British system of canals – the most important inland waterways converge there. The calculations made in the 18th century proved that water transport is cheaper than horse or railway ones and for that reason the authorities invested in the construction of the national system of canals used for transporting coal, steel and produce. Thanks to that investment Birmingham had become the birthplace of the English industrial revolution and Gas Street was the place where unloading and loading goods did not stop even at night. For that reason the street was the first in the city where gas lamps were installed – the street owes its name to such lighting.
