Patio is an architectonic form that originated from the Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American architecture. The term “patio” was used to refer to the inner courtyard of a house, that was cobbled with stone or tiled with terracotta tiles. It was often surrounded with a cloister. Patio used to be decorated with plants, fountains and other little architectonic forms. Sometimes patios were situated between a house and garden. It was a recreational space, providing coolness and shade during the hottest hours of a day. Patios were also places where people spent evenings and organizes receptions. Over time such cobbled spaces have become popular in other parts of the world and can be perceived as an oasis of peace, where people can rest and meet friends.
