Helsinki is the capital of Finland. The city was established in 1550 on the Gulf of Finland. The Senate Square (Finnish: Senaatintori) is the most representative place of Helsinki. There are Helsinki University, the Government Palace, white Helsinki Cathedral with spherical cupolas (Finnish: Helsingin tuomiokirkko) and the statue of Emperor Alexander II. One of the most beautiful and best recognizable buildings of Helsinki is the Dormition Cathedral, the most significant Orthodox temple in the country and the symbol commemorating the past of Finland, which belonged to Russia in the 19th century. The Russian influence is visible everywhere in Helsinki, as the architecture of the city was meant to correspond with the style of Petersburg at that time.
