The wooden bridge in Bad Säckingen, the resort town located in south-western Germany, is the longest wooden bridge in Europe. The bridge itself is over 203 meters long, whereas together with the canopy which covers the foot-bridge it is 206,5 meters long. The first written record concerning the construction that spans the two banks of the Rhine river appeared in the sources as early as in the 13th century, however, historians claim that the bridge can be ever 200 years older. Throughout its long history the bridge has been destroyed many times, either by floods or the warfare. Nevertheless, the people of Bad Säckingen have always rebuilt it. Today, as the most precious tourist attraction of the commune, it is under the strict protection of the preservationist and it is renovated on regular basis.
