The Moscow metro is one of the oldest and largest transportation systems of this type. Metro consists of 12 lines and 195 stations, whereas the total length of lines is 325 kilometers. The Moscow Metro is used daily by about 7 million people, making it one of the busiest systems in the world. The first line was opened in 1935. As the city and its population grew absorbing suburban areas, the Moscow metro has been gradually expanded too. The suburban areas are served by the so-called light rail, i.e. elevated lines. They connect the most distant districts with the underground metro lines, which are not any worse in terms of speed and convenience of travelling.
