The Retezat National Park covering an area of more than eleven thousand hectares is located in the Southern Carpathians. It is the oldest national park in Romania established in 1935. The high Retezat Mountains are located within its boundaries. The park is known for picturesque glacial valleys, foaming cascades, dense mixed forests and areas overgrown with stone and dwarf pines. Within the protected area there are dozens of glacial lakes. The largest of them, Bucura, is located at an altitude of 2,030 meters above sea level.
