Saint-Paul de Vence is a commune in the French department of Alpes-Maritimes. There is a medieval town of the same name, with a fortress built atop of a nearby hill. It is picturesquely situated and surrounded by walls. Residents of the town decorate their narrow streets by arranging small charming gardens with citrus trees, ivies climbing the walls and a large number of clay pots in which aromatic herbs grow. Jewish painter and graphic designer Marc Chagall used to live in Saint-Paul de Vence. The stone town with the unique climate attracted numerous artists – the masterpieces of Matiss, Soutine, Renoire and Signac were created there.
