La Roche Bernard is a commune and village situated in the north-west of the French region of Brittany. The village was founded in the year 919 by a Viking chief named Bern-hart. He saw the strategic advantages of the surroundings – La Roche Bernard is situated on a wide river La Vilaine, several kilometers inland, but with an easy access to the sea. The village was an important local port until the 19th century, and today it is very well known for its beautiful waterfront. La Roche Bernard is a flourishing yacht marina, as over half a thousand of private boats are moored here, the owners of which often visit this charming village.
