Gdańsk Shipyard is the most famous business of this type of in Poland. It was founded in 1804 on the left bank of the Martwa Wisła (literally: Dead Vistula). Large merchant seagoing ships had been built in Gdańsk as early as in the 1470s. Nevertheless, the year 1804 is considered to be the moment when the shipyard began when Jan Klawitter founded the first modern enterprise building wooden sailing ships and then steamships. Over the decades of its existence the Gdańsk Shipyard has witnessed many historical events, the most important of which was the rise of the "Solidarity" – a nationwide trade union which played a significant role in the overthrow of the communist regime.
