The Buddhist temple of Borobudur is located on the Indonesian island of Java, near the city of Magelang. It was probably built in the 8th century, but until now we do not know the purpose of its construction, nor by whom and on whose initiative it was built. The temple complex consists mainly of stairs and terraces, richly decorated with trachyte reliefs and hundreds of statues of Buddha. Figurines of meditating Buddha are also placed inside dozens of openwork bell-shaped stupas, situated on the highest round terraces.
