For many centuries, sumptuous interiors of Catholic churches have been meant to impress the faithful and emphasize the majesty of the Church. Numerous paintings, frescoes and sculptures are placed in churches not only for an aesthetic function, but they are also meant to familiarize the parishioners with the Saints and depict the scenes from the Bible. Mother of God has a special place in Christian iconography as her various images can be found in almost every church. A richly decorated altar, where the priest says a mass is situated in the central part of the temple. The figure of crucified Jesus Christ is usually located above the altar. Windows of the churches are mostly filled with colorful stained glass, arranged in intricate patterns. Sunbeams penetrating the windows illuminate the interior of the church with colorful reflections.
