Singapore is a city-state off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. Its name comes from the Sanskrit (singa - lion, pura - city), that is why it is often called the City of Lion. Singapore regained full in 1965 (Independent Republic of Singapore). The central part of the city-state is occupied by the financial district. Within its limits there are the most important economic and business institutions (banks, stock-exchange, government organizations). Singapore is considered to be the most developed (after Japan) country of Asia as well as the forth (after London, New York and Tokyo) financial centre of the world. Singapore is in the world top if it comes to GDP (about $31,400 per person).
