Torre de Belém fortress in the Portuguese capital was erected in 1520 on the orders of king Manuel the Great. The military building is located on the bank of the Tagus River that flows into the Atlantic Ocean. Originally, it performed defensive functions, ensuring security of the port area. For years it was also an important landmark, as well as a prison where Józef Bem, the Polish and Hungarian national hero, was imprisoned. The lowest levels of Torre de Belém are located under water, the balconies of the upper floors are decorated with characteristic rows of columns. Another important building in the Belém district of Lisbon is the magnificent Hieronymites Monastery, it was also built in the first half of the 16th century, i.e. the age of the Great Geographical Discoveries.
