Lyon is a city full of monuments and the historic Vieux Lyon district. The Old Town may be accessed by the Passerelle Paul Couturier – the bridge for pedestrians and cyclists, which was opened in 1853. The footbridge was renovated and painted dark-red in 1996. The neo-Gothic Church of St George is located on the left bank of the Saône River. The city is dominated by the 19th-century Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, architecturally reflecting a mixture of Romanesque and Byzantine styles.
