Pantheon in Rome (Italy) online puzzle
The Pantheon is one of the oldest and best preserved buildings in Rome. It was built within the Campus Martius (Latin for the “Field of Mars”) in 125 AD on the order of Emperor Hadrian. The temple that had stood at this site earlier was completely destroyed in the great fire of Rome in 80 AD. It was dedicated to the gods of the city’s welfare, while the new place of worship was dedicated to all the planetary gods and the ruler reigning at that time. The Pantheon had been fortunate to survive the barbarian raids on the Roman Empire and from the beginning of the 7th century it functioned as the Church of St Mary of the Martyrs. Due to converting it into a Christian temple, it escaped the fate of many Roman buildings that were demolished in order to obtain building material.
